Bartram’s Garden receives grant from The William Penn Foundation

October 16, 2015

Bartram’s Garden is pleased to be the recipient of a $2 million, three-year grant from The William Penn Foundation. This funding will increase access to the Schuylkill River and promote Bartram’s Garden as a cultural hub in Southwest Philadelphia. Among the areas targeted are capital projects and programming for enhanced use of the river as a community recreational space and environmental center.

This work will foster community engagement, provide environmental education, and preserve the ecology of the tidal Schuylkill riverfront. In addition, the popular Schuylkill River Trail will eventually reach Bartram’s Garden as part of the Bartram Mile section.

Adds board chair Elizabeth Bressi-Stoppe: “This generous grant will help shape Bartram’s Garden as Philadelphia’s preeminent river garden. No other place in the city combines American history and horticulture with a half mile of natural riverfront.

“With support from the William Penn Foundation, our community in Southwest Philadelphia and visitors from across the region will have access to recreational, educational, and cultural experiences that will engage their curiosity and provide a garden in their backyard. We are extremely grateful to The William Penn Foundation for this opportunity.”
