Insect Night

August 18, 2023 @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm

Who hangs out in Bartram’s Garden after the sun goes down?

We’ll be checking out nighttime insects and animals in the Garden with Horticulturalist Mandy Katz and Naturalist Ken Frank (author of Ecology of Center City Philadelphia  and Sex In City Plants, Animals, Fungi, and More .

We will meet in the wooded Lower Garden between the pond and the River, and explore the area, luring an incredible array of nocturnal insects with black lights, overripe bananas, and molasses.

Intrigued? Come out for a rare opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the ethereal animals that spend the days hidden in plain sight in Philly’s urban wilderness. Open to seasoned entomologists and curious newcomers alike, we’ll work together to observe, identify and photograph moths and other insects drawn to light and sugar traps in the garden. Bring your flashlight, camera, and insect repellant!

No registration is required!
