Black Food & Faith Matters: Food, Faith, Violence, and the Environment

Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden & WURD Radio celebrate Earth Day with explorations and conversations with Muslim & Christian faith leaders illustrating environmental consciousness.

Join us in the Garden’s Upper Meadow for a lively conversation on the role of faith and spirituality in Black communities and in Black food sovereignty work. Our conversation will be featured as part of the WURD Radio show “Reality Check” and will be moderated by show host Charles Ellison, with a light lunch to follow. Local Black faith leaders and farmers of faith will gather to talk candidly about some of the most pressing issues in the African American community in Philadelphia today related to food, liberation, health, and what Black sovereignty can look like in our historic city.

‘Food and Faith’ Roundtable

Food and faith have been among the most powerful elements of connection to one another – from the land to bridging the gap in both survival and liberation in the African diaspora.  This conversation will explore the role of faith and spirituality in Black food sovereignty work from the perspectives of local Black faith leaders and farmers. The conversation will explore ancestral connections between food and faith, as well as the future of food movements in Black communities.

 

‘Violence and the Environment’

This conversation with local leaders will explore place-based solutions and the intersection of sustainable environmental practices that could impact the reduction of violence in our communities.

Philadelphia serves as a prime example of this link as it remains the poorest big city in the United States, a majority-Black urban center of 1.6 million people where African American residents are perpetually battling broader issues, such as residential displacement, violence, food deserts, pollution, and climate change.
